SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting: Take it from a Millennial : Generational Differences
DESCRIPTION:Generational differences in the workplace go far beyond the occasional pop culture references. Employees from different generations have different expectations of the workplace. This presentation will cover how generation differences impact the manager/employee relationship as well as team dynamics. The presentation will also cover what employers can do to recruit\, retain\, and mentor millennials to become their next leaders. Other tough questions will be discussed\, such as how to balance tried and true strategies while not stifling new ideas. \nPam Duffy\, P.E. \nPam Duffy\, P.E. is the owner of Spark One Solutions\, LLC based in Dallas\, TX – a marketing and business solutions company based serving A/E/C businesses. \nShe has a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Central Florida and is a licensed PE. She has over 10 years of experience in the HVAC industry in roles varying from mechanical design\, to technical training\, to marketing and sales. Now\, she uses her diverse background to help A/E/C companies communicate their value to customers with marketing. \nPam serves on many boards and committees in ASHRAE. Pam was President of the Atlanta Chapter during 2013-2014\, during which they won the Chapter of the Year award.  At the Society level\, Pam serves on the society Communications Committee and is a member of several Technical Committees. \nOutside of ASHRAE\, Pam is a Life Member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE)\, has been named to the Consulting-Specifying Engineer’s list of 40 under 40\, and serves on the AHR Expo Industry Council. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Chapter Meeting: ASHRAE 55 – Thermal Comfort Standards and Updates
DESCRIPTION:Christian Taber\, Principal Engineer – Codes and Standards\, LEED AP BD+C\, HBDP\, BEMP\, CEM \nChristian Taber is a senior engineer at Big Ass Fans\, working on building codes/standards and fan test standards that impact the fan industry. \nTaber is an ASHRAE certified High-Performance Building Design Professional\, a Certified Energy Manager\, and a committee member of ASHRAE Standards 90.1. He is also a member of the review committees for AMCA 230\, 214\, 211\, 208\, and 11.  He holds an M.S. in mechanical engineering and B.S. in chemical engineering from Iowa State University\, and an M.S. in biosystems engineering from the University of Kentucky. \nWhile at Big Ass Fans\, Taber has advanced the research and knowledge of air movement as it relates to energy modeling and the LEED Rating Systems\, helping to create a more impactful integration of air movement in building projects. He is also a former member of the USGBC Energy and Atmosphere Technical Advisory Group.  This has allowed air movement to be incorporated in facilities worldwide for energy efficiency and reduced reliance on HVAC. \nPrior to Big Ass Solutions\, Taber worked at Trane as a Marketing Engineer and Applications Engineer\, where he developed a LEED specific energy modeling course that he taught to design professionals nationwide. \nTaber has been involved in several high profile energy efficient projects\, including the LEED Gold Big Ass Solutions Research & Design Facility. His articles on air movement and energy efficiency have been published in multiple publications\, and he has presented at ASHRAE and AIA conferences nationally.

DESCRIPTION:Topic \nASHRAE Standard 62.1 – Where have we been\, where are we now and where are we going?    \nExplanation of the evolution of Standard 62.1 including what ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2019 will look like with the proposed changes to the IAQP and VRP. \n\nKnow that there are major changes proposed in Standard 62.1\nUnderstand the changes in the Ventilation Rate Procedure\nUnderstand the new Indoor Air Quality Procedure being proposed\n\nSSPC 62.1 is making major modifications to the standard and is close to publishing the 2019 version. These include a new Natural Ventilation Rate Procedure\, a new Indoor Air Quality Procedure and changes to the Ventilation Rate Procedure that will have major impact on the way the standard will be applied. \n  \nBio of Speaker \nBrian Hafendorfer\, PE | Systems Development Engineer | Trane \nBrian began his career with Trane in 2000 spending 8 years as a product engineer focusing on the design and development of air handling systems with a specific focus on air heating and cooling coils.  Since joining the systems and applications engineering team in 2008\, Brian’s role has been to develop and support integrated customer solutions for HVAC products & systems\, providing a link between the sales\, design\, and manufacturing organizations.  Filtration and air cleaning\, indoor air quality\, heating and cooling coils\, and variable refrigerant flow have been Brian’s primary interests.  He has authored numerous whitepapers and articles on a variety of topics that have been published around the world. \nBrian is a licensed professional engineer and earned his Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Kentucky. He is an active member of ASHRAE receiving the Distinguished Service Award and the Chapter Service Award for his continued support in moving the industry forward.  Brian has served on multiple ASHRAE committees as subcommittee chair for SSPC 62.1 – Ventilation for Acceptable Indoor Air Quality\, past chair of TC 2.9 Ultraviolet Air and Surface Treatment\, and as a member of TC 2.3 – Gaseous Air Contaminants and Gas Contaminant Removal Equipment.  Brian also is the current treasurer for Region VII and has served as the advisory panel chair for ISO TC 142 Working Group 2 – UVC technology.

DESCRIPTION:Design firms are being pushed by clients to save time and money\, but in doing so we run the risk of providing the code minimum design or not spending the right amount of time investigating current conditions. This leaves projects that end up costing a lot more time and money for both the engineer and owner. The presentation digs into some of these issues based on actual project results. \n\nUnderstand the downstream operational impacts of code minimum design\nDevelop an understanding of some facility operational issues\nImprove design practices from lessons learned\n\nHeather Platt\, PE\, MBA \nHeather earned her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Buffalo and her M.B.A. at Medaille College.
