He was formerly the Executive Director of Research and Development at AAON\, Inc. in Tulsa\, Oklahoma prior to his retirement after almost 18 years of engineering leadership at AAON. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Physics from Missouri State University and is a Licensed Professional Engineer. \nIn ASHRAE\, Mr. Fly holds the grade of Fellow and is a Life Member having been honored with both the Distinguished Service and Exceptional Service Awards. He has also participated in the Technical on Sound\, Unitary Sector Leadership Council and is currently serving on the Systems Steering Committee and Applied Sector Leadership Council. \nTopic: The Future of HVAC Energy Efficiency – Pushing the Boundaries of HVAC Efficiency – Current Technology\, What’s Next \nRegulations and their associated compliance metrics are developed to drive the desired results. However\, as it is only practical to simplify these metrics\, they often result in manifesting unintended consequences. As we raise the bar on energy efficiency\, in order to lower building energy and carbon consumption\, the means of measurement and regulation must necessarily become more complex. As the end goal is to reduce the Whole Building Energy and Carbon Use\, more sophisticated modeling of equipment energy consumption will be required. This also necessarily include the modeling both equipment and building sequence of controls and operations. Future metrics will have to rely more on whole building energy modeling combined with continuous commissioning to ensure continued efficient building operation. This requires the future development of performance maps all types of equipment as well as better incorporation of control and operation sequences into modeling software. This presentation will discuss where we are and what needs to be done to change how we evaluate system efficiency by: \n\nUnderstanding the difference between equipment and system efficacy\nReviewing where we have been and what happened when we reach “Max Tech” in equipment efficiency\nEvaluating where equipment is rated vs. where it operates\nDiscovering what tools need to be developed to change how we evaluate building energy performance\n\n  \nSpeaker: Luke Leung – Principal Principal of the Sustainability Engineering Studio – Skidmore\, Owings & Merrill \n \nLuke Leung is an ASHRAE and LEED Fellow. A Centennial Fellow of The Pennsylvania State University Architectural Engineering program\, he has been deeply involved in ASHRAE’s mission—serving as Commercial Team Leader for the ASHRAE Epidemic Task Force\, member of the Task Force for Building Decarbonization Executive Committee\, and committee member of the Center of Excellence for Building Decarbonization. But what if the key lies not in choosing one over the other\, but in orchestrating both? This is the essence of Collaboration Intelligence (CI): a methodology that leverages the complementary strengths of human insight and AI capability to decarbonize buildings at portfolio scale. This presentation introduces the result of a real project where a five-step CI framework is applied across a major U.S. building portfolio. Step one\, Building Data Collection\, harnesses AI’s breadth and speed with human discernment to extract and structure data—both quantitative and hidden-in-plain-sight. In step two\, Interviewing the Facility Team\, human conversations bring forth tacit knowledge no sensor can detect. Step three\, Benchmark and Analysis\, engages AI to assess each building’s relative performance\, identifying inefficiencies and emissions hotspots. In step four\, Strategizing Emissions Reduction Measures\, AI rapidly models and ranks interventions for maximum carbon impact. This approach builds on mature distributed water-source heat pump systems\, which have long been used in multizone buildings. \nThis session examines the design implications of these electrified systems that use an AWHP for both heat addition and heat rejection. It will compare the efficiency of electrified and traditional WSHP systems\, including the effects of compressor lift\, heating and cooling performance\, and potential cooling-efficiency tradeoffs. Design topics will include AWHP sizing\, defrost and ambient temperature limits\, auxiliary heat\, pumping and flow management\, and the roles of buffer tanks\, glycol\, dry coolers\, economizers\, and backup boilers. The session will also discuss enhancements such as thermal storage\, load shifting\, exhaust heat recovery\, hybrid systems\, and domestic hot water integration. \n \nJohn Sustar started in the HVAC industry in 2009\, specializing in energy modeling\, electrical\, mechanical\, and hydronic systems. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering followed by a Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Iowa State University and a Master of Science in Biosystems Engineering from the University of Kentucky. Christian’s graduate work focused on renewable energy and sustainable building design. \nChristian has worked as a marketing and applications engineer for Trane\, where he trained thousands of customers on building energy modeling. He has also taught several undergraduate engineering courses on HVAC/Environmental Control at the University of Kentucky. \nChristian is an active participant in regulations\, standards\, and building code development and collaborates with ASHRAE\, AMCA\, US DOE\, and the ICC. He is a member of ASHRAE’s Standards Committee/Standards Project Liaison Subcommittee (SPLS)\, a voting member of SSPC 90.1\, a member of GPC 37\, and was a voting member of SSPC 189.1. Christian is also an ASHRAE Building Energy Modeling Professional\, an ASHRAE High-Performance Building Design Professional (HPBDP)\, and an AEE Certified Energy Manager (CEM). \nChristian’s contributions to the air movement industry include leadership roles on publications\, test standards\, and codes for fans. He currently chairs AMCA’s North American Air Movement Advocacy Committee and AMCA Standard 340\, a new standard being developed for rating the sound performance for large diameter ceiling fans. He is also the Vice Chair of the AMCA Air Movement Division and a member of the North America Region Steering Committee. Christian has served on committees for the recent revisions to ANSI/AMCA test and rating standards 230\, 214\, 210\, 208\, 99 and AMCA Publications 211 and 11\, which are operating manuals for the AMCA Certified Rating System. \nChristian has several articles in the ASHRAE Journal and has presented his work at various national and international conferences. He has been granted a patent for a condensation control system\, was part of a team that designed an experiment sent to the International Space Station\, and provided technical support to Congress for the proposed and enacted Ceiling Fan Improvement Act of 2020. \nIn his free time\, Christian enjoys outdoor activities with his wife and twin daughters. He currently resides in Minneapolis\, Minnesota. \nBoiler Best Practices for Design\, Installation\, and Maintenance – Mike Dixon\, P.E. sponsored by Patterson-Kelly\nFriday July 24\, 11:00 AM \nMike will be presenting on aspects for consideration during design\, installation\, and maintenance of a boiler system which affect the boiler’s operation. This presentation highlights how to avoid potential issues which may occur during start-up that would cause problems and not allow optimal boiler operation. Anyone who is involved in hydronic systems should attend this presentation. \n \nMike Dixon\, P.E. has been an ASHRAE Member for 16 years and has previously served as Membership Promotion and Refrigeration Chair for the Triangle Chapter. Currently he is a member of the Southern Piedmont Chapter. \nMike obtained his B.S. and M.S. in Engineering from North Carolina State University and has been a registered Professional Engineer in North Carolina since 2000. Mike has practiced as both a Civil Engineer and a Mechanical Engineer and has experience in Mechanical Systems (Hydronic\, Plumbing\, Balancing\, Fire Protection\, Special Hazards FP)\, WWTP Design and Installation\, Manufacturing\, Engineering Design\, Underground Pipeline Installation\, Retention / Detention Design\, and Storm Drainage. \nMike has worked with HVAC systems for the past 20 years. When he returned to Mechanical Engineering\, he worked with EPCs on industrial projects with Victaulic and transitioned to MEP before leaving to work as a Regional Sales Manager with EnviroSep.
