DESCRIPTION:Topic: Energy Efficient Solutions for Commercial Kitchen Ventilation \nSummary: Restaurants are among the buildings with the highest energy intensity in commercial sector. They contribute over 500 trillion Btu to the U.S. annual energy consumption. This presentation will give practical recommendations how to reduce energy consumption of a foodservice facility by up to 50% and improve its indoor environmental quality for better employees’ and customers’ satisfaction. This presentation will describe new designs as well as recommendations how to improve efficiency of existing commercial kitchens. It will also cover requirements of the latest edition of ASHRAE 90.1 Standard in regards to efficient ventilation design of commercial kitchens. Presentation will be useful for owners\, operators\, energy and design professionals involved in design\, construction and operation of foodservice facilities. \nPresenter: Dr. Andrey Livchak has over 30 years of international experience in the HVAC industry. He graduated from Moscow Civil Engineering University in 1983 with honors and M.Sc. degree. In 1989 he received Ph.D. in engineering from the same university. His expertise covers several areas including air distribution\, heat recovery\, cooling\, heating systems\, acoustics and commercial kitchen ventilation. Dr. Livchak started his engineering career in 1983 in Moscow working at the government research laboratory. He joined Halton in 1989 working first in its European division and in 1998 moved to the U.S. to manage Halton R&D center. In his current position as the Director of Global R&D for the Foodservice division\, Dr. Livchak is responsible for planning and coordinating research and development of five Halton Research Centers in America\, Europe and Asia. Dr. Livchak is an active AHRAE member\, he works on TC 5.3 (Air Distribution) and SPC-200 Method of Testing Chilled Beams committees\, has over 50 publications including more than 20 patents.

This presentation reviews a wide spectrum of technologies in the marketplace\, highlighting how they work\, how they are best applied\, and the consequences of their use in practical terms of infection risk reduction\, occupant limitations\, and cost/energy consumption. \nSpeaker: \nChristian Taber\, Principal Engineer\, Big Ass Fans \nSpeaker Bio: \nChristian Taber is a principal engineer at Big Ass Fans\, working on building codes/standards and fan test standards that impact the fan industry. Taber is an ASHRAE certified High-Performance Building Design Professional\, a Certified Energy Manager\, and a committee member of ASHRAE Standard 90.1 and ASHRAE GPC37. SUMMARY:March Chapter Meeting: Applying Upper Room Germicidal UV –in the pandemic and beyond
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: \nRichard L. Vincent\, MSc\, FIES\, Chair ASHRAE GPC 37 \nMount Sinai Hospital\, Icahn School of Medicine \n  \nBio: \nMr. Vincent applies germicidal ultraviolet (GUV) disinfection technology and tools to control the transmission of tuberculosis and other infectious diseases both airborne and surface borne (fomite) or mix-mode\, in high-risk settings. He was the project manager and UV lighting specialist for the Tuberculosis Ultraviolet Shelter Study (TUSS)\, (1997-2004). TUSS—a multidisciplinary\, multicenter epidemiological field trial of ultraviolet air cleansing effectiveness formed by St. Vincent’s Hospital and the Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH) advanced UVGI application for airborne disease control in homeless shelters. At the Mount Sinai Hospital\, he is working to reduce the rate of hospital-acquired infections (HAIs) by benchmarking the efficacy of various technologies including mobile\, whole-room UVC devices for decontamination of surfaces from pathogens such as MRSA\, and C. Difficile. He has studied the use of stationary UV units to clean mobile technology. He is collaborating with the Harvard Medical School and the South African National Institute of Occupational Health on testing prototype upper room UV LED air disinfecting technology. He is studying UV LED surface disinfection in the laboratory and then in situ. Since 2008 he has been on faculty at the Harvard Course: Building Design and Engineering to Prevent Airborne Infection – An International Approach. He has taught a shortened course in Pretoria\, South Africa and Mumbai\, and New Delhi\, India. He has provided technical assistance on GUV projects in India\, Myanmar\, and Pakistan. Since 2016\, Mr. Vincent serves as the Coordinator for the StopTB Partnership working Group: End TB Transmission Initiative (ETTI). He provided expert input on GUV for the WHO Guidelines on tuberculosis infection prevention and control\, 2019 update. Mr. Vincent chairs the ASHRAE GCP 37 developing guidelines for the application of upper-room ultraviolet germicidal irradiation systems (UVGI/GUV). Further\, he chairs ASHRAE TC 2.9 subcommittee on research for UVGI air and surface disinfection. Mr. Vincent chairs the CIE TC 6-52 to develop a test method for gonioradiometric measurement of upper room GUV fixtures. He is the project director of a two-year pilot inpatient study of LED adaptive lighting systems to promote sleep for hospitalized patients. He is working with the IES Photobiology committee\, ASHRAE\, and the CIE to make recommendations for GUV in response to the COVID 19 pandemic. \n  \nTitle:  \nApplying Upper Room Germicidal UV –in the pandemic and beyond \n  \nDescription:  \nUpper Room (UR) Germicidal UV (GUV) air disinfection is an effective intervention to control the pandemic spread of SARS-CoV-2. UR GUV is known to work against a wide range of airborne pathogens including: TB\, influenza\, measles\, and SARS. ASHRAE GPC 37 is preparing Guidelines for Applying UR GUV. DESCRIPTION:Presentation Description:\nMark Jordan will be present to update our industry with current boiler codes and the changes occurring for this year and years to come.  Mr. Jordan will discuss how the industry is trending and evolving with new technology.  Come join us for a Q and A session with the chief boiler inspector of the state of Kentucky.  We will also be addressing domestic hot water boiler design and storage tanks if time will allow. \nSpeaker Bio:\nMr. Jordan is a mechanical engineering graduate of Georgetown College.  With an interest specializing in steam\, Mark worked as a General Manager for the Rail Tourist Service Group serving steam locomotive lines.  After 14 years of service\, he joined the ranks of Boiler Inspector in the state of Kentucky.  After the retirement of Rodney Handy in 2015\, Mr. Jordan assumed the role of Chief Boiler Inspector for the state of Kentucky as well as serving for the national board of boiler and pressure vessel inspections.

DESCRIPTION:Program Description:\nBuilding Controls: The Future of Smart Technology: \nIn today’s commercial buildings\, controls are required to operate not just equipment but our buildings as a whole.  Building automation systems make the operator’s life easier through graphical interfaces and allow consolidated control of scheduling and set points.  That’s nice\, but we can do so much more with what we have! \nWhat is “Smart” technology with respect to building automation systems?  We will discuss how leveraging the existing controls hardware infrastructure can expose the day to day operations of the building and equipment in such a way as to allow the building operators to make smart decisions about the scheduling and operation of the building as well as quickly spot potential problems and understand how they can affect the comfort of the occupants and the energy consumption of the building. \nAbout the Speaker: \nBob Coleman\, Lead Engineer\nBob\, currently Lead Engineer for TES Controls in Lexington\, KY\, earned his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Kentucky in 1999 and has been in the HVAC industry for more than 20 years.  At TES Controls he oversees design and implementation of building and industrial control systems to meet customer needs. \nPrior to TES Controls\, Bob worked at Trane as an Applications Engineer and Systems Development Engineer.  While his focus has evolved over the years\, he has spent the majority of his career focusing the application and design of complex\, high efficiency applied systems\, particularly in the areas of electrical and control systems and system modeling. \nBob is an active member of ASHRAE\, including long term involvement with TC 2.9 – Ultraviolet Air and Surface Treatment\, TC 1.4 – Control Theory and Application\, TC 7.5 – Smart Building Systems\, TC 1.11 – Electric Motors and Motor Control\, and SPC 222 – Standard Method of Test for Electrical Power Drive Systems. \nIn his free time\, Bob enjoys hunting\, writing software using obscure programming languages\, and playing with microcontrollers\, as well as spending time with his wife and three children.

SUMMARY:Technical Tour and Christmas Party
DESCRIPTION:The new Fredrick Douglass High School is a two-story 287\,125 SF educational facility serving 1800 students and 150 staff that is the sixth high school in Fayette County Public School District. The facility fulfilled a need for the additional capacity required in the rapidly growing school district with the intent of being the district’s first net-zero ready high school. It also is home to the Carter G. Woodson Academy; a 6th-12th-grade academy focused on at-promise minority males in the district. With the use of efficient systems and equipment\, the school currently operates at 18.3 EUI (Energy Use Intensity). It has achieved a 100 Energy Star score (the first perfect score high school in Kentucky) This makes it the most energy-efficient high school in the state. DESCRIPTION:NFPA 13: Updates and Standards to Fire Protection Engineering\nKentucky was one of the pioneers of Fire Protection Engineering in the United States.  This presentation will discuss the history of fire protection and how these codes/standards have evolved into what it is in modern-day.  NFPA Standards – 13/14\, standpipe design\, wet-pipe sprinkler systems\, dry pipe sprinkler systems\, fire pump design\, and occupancy use groups will be some of the items also discussed.  These systems serve a critical part in an ever-changing building environment that changes with jurisdiction.  With life safety becoming a key element in building design today\, Fire Protection is among the most important today. \nSpeaker Bio: \nGary R. Smith\, CET\nDirector of Fire Protection Engineering\nMr. Smith is a 40+ year veteran of the built industry\, specifically in the design of fire protection systems. Before joining KLH\, Mr. Smith spent many years as an independent designer and consultant in the fire protection field. His experience also includes preparing designs for new installations and innovative solutions for retro-fit buildings.  Mr. Smith has extensive experience designing fire protection systems across multiple markets including commercial\, industrial\, civic\, education\, healthcare\, and retail.

DESCRIPTION:Generational differences in the workplace go far beyond the occasional pop culture references. Employees from different generations have different expectations of the workplace. This presentation will cover how generation differences impact the manager/employee relationship as well as team dynamics. The presentation will also cover what employers can do to recruit\, retain\, and mentor millennials to become their next leaders. Other tough questions will be discussed\, such as how to balance tried and true strategies while not stifling new ideas. \nPam Duffy\, P.E. \nPam Duffy\, P.E. is the owner of Spark One Solutions\, LLC based in Dallas\, TX – a marketing and business solutions company based serving A/E/C businesses. \nShe has a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Central Florida and is a licensed PE. She has over 10 years of experience in the HVAC industry in roles varying from mechanical design\, to technical training\, to marketing and sales. Now\, she uses her diverse background to help A/E/C companies communicate their value to customers with marketing. \nPam serves on many boards and committees in ASHRAE. Pam was President of the Atlanta Chapter during 2013-2014\, during which they won the Chapter of the Year award.  At the Society level\, Pam serves on the society Communications Committee and is a member of several Technical Committees. \nOutside of ASHRAE\, Pam is a Life Member of the Society of Women Engineers (SWE)\, has been named to the Consulting-Specifying Engineer’s list of 40 under 40\, and serves on the AHR Expo Industry Council. \n  \n
