Kentucky was one of the pioneers of Fire Protection Engineering in the United States. This presentation will discuss the history of fire protection and how these codes/standards have evolved into what it is in modern-day. NFPA Standards – 13/14, standpipe design, wet-pipe sprinkler systems, dry pipe sprinkler systems, fire pump design, and occupancy use groups will be some of the items also discussed. These systems serve a critical part in an ever-changing building environment that changes with jurisdiction. With life safety becoming a key element in building design today, Fire Protection is among the most important today.
Speaker Bio:
Gary R. Smith, CET
Director of Fire Protection Engineering
Mr. Smith is a 40+ year veteran of the built industry, specifically in the design of fire protection systems. Before joining KLH, Mr. Smith spent many years as an independent designer and consultant in the fire protection field. His experience also includes preparing designs for new installations and innovative solutions for retro-fit buildings. Mr. Smith has extensive experience designing fire protection systems across multiple markets including commercial, industrial, civic, education, healthcare, and retail.
